Easy Expense Tracking with Expensr
Filed Under Free Stuff, Finance Apps, Budgeting
We’re a bunch of geeks on WBD and although blogging is our first love, we like nothing more than to spend our free time messing around with the latest web apps that the internet has to offer.
Expensr is a free expense tracking and budgeting app, and after using it for over a month now, we could easily recommend it to those who’d like to find out where their money goes every month.
Sign up for a free account here.
The one thing we really liked about Expensr is that it’s easy to use. You can manually input your expenses or securely upload bank account statements in .OFX format. Expenses are sorted into categories and sub-categories, and analyzing your account is a breeze with visualization tools such as pie charts and bar graphs. It also has basic budgeting features that allow you to create budgets for categories to track your spending and projected spending.
Like other Web 2.0 sites, Expensr has a social networking function built into it. Although it didn’t really enhance our money management all that much, it did inject some fun into the whole process. We could compare our spending to other users based on tags such as male, female, in my twenties, renting. (We’re about on par with the average single, 20-something year old living in a big city).
There’s also an optional StatMatch feature which lets you compare expenses with people tagged as ‘friends’ presumably to add a little competitive spending to the whole experience.
Pros: Easy to use, useful visualization tools, social networking adds a fun element.
Cons: User interface still needs a little tweaking, not as intuitive as we would have liked.
Verdict: Expensr is a great tool for those who want to get a leg-up in money management. The developers have kept it sleek and streamlined with a tight focus on expense tracking. However, for those who’d like a more comprehensive money management tool, Expensr probably falls short.
